Interview with Kevin Saidler, of Fotothing.com
by Anthony Cohn, People Search News
PSN: What exactly is Fotothing?
KS: Fotothing is like a blog, with photos instead of words - a photoblog. Fotothing allows you to share your latest and greatest photos with your friends, family and the world. Other users can post comments on your photos, and the most recently updated Fotothings appear on the home page. You can use Fotothing to keep a daily record of your life in photographic format, document the growth of your kids, or simply to get public feedback on your latest work of art. The possibilities are endless. Fotothing also provides full RSS feeds for everyone, so you can easily link to your latest photos from your web site or blog.
PSN: What is a photo blog?
KS: A photo blog is a platform for sharing and publishing in the format of a blog, but instead focuses on photographs rather than text.
PSN: How many members does Fotothing currently have?
KS: 130,000 and growing! We expect this figure to increase as we improve Fotothing over the coming months – watch this space!
PSN: What sets Fotothing apart from other photo sharing web sites?
KS: I would say the community aspect of the site: the level of social interaction amongst Fotothing users is incredible. It really is so much more than just a photo blog!
PSN: Describe Fotothing Challenges?
KS: The Fotothing Challenge is a weekly competition which gives Fotothing users a theme. They are encouraged to go out and take a picture in order to interpret the theme in the best and most original way they can.
The judges consider all the entries and award first, second and third positions as well as a list of Honourable Mentions. There are no prizes awarded but the winning picture is displayed on the Challenge page and always receives a good deal of congratulatory comments from fellow Fotothingers.
PSN: What are some important tips to keep in mind when purchasing a camera?
KS: In my opinion if you are taking pics to upload and share with friends on sites such as Fotothing then don’t be taken in by the retailers’ obsession with pixels. The amount of pixels a camera has only has a bearing on the print size. In my opinion very few people print photographs nowadays, preferring to share them instead via photo blogging sites such as Fotothing with friends and family. Three to four million pixels is more than sufficient to view a photograph on a computer screen. Why pay for something you don’t need? Well, that is exactly what you are doing if you buy an expansive camera with 10 million pixels. I would advise looking into other features such as ‘long battery life’, ‘easy to set preferences’, ‘optical zoom’, ‘easy photograph browsing’, ‘durability’ and ‘solid design’.
PSN: On Fotothing, what object seems to be photographed the most?
KS: I would say portrait photography, nature (especially flowers) and general macro images. More recently, we’ve seen a growing number of experimental photographs using Photoshop.
PSN: Any new additions or changes to Fotothing in the near future?
KS: The Fotothing team are currently adding to the features aspect of the site in order to make Fotothing more socially interactive – more groups and more user-generated content in the form of user organized competitions.
PSN: Where can someone go to get more information on Fotothing or create their own photo blog?
KS: The website itself (www.fotothing.com) is the best place to get started. Anyone can set up their own page on Fotothing – it’s very easy and it’s free to join!
