Background-Databases.com Review

Online Dating Safety www.background-databases.com

Cost: Free
Launched Date: August, 2006
Category: Public Records Database

Hello all, my name is Rick Tufington and I am a frequent contributor to People Search News, located on assignment overseas (it sounds so cool to say that!). Each week, I will be reviewing a new people search site on the Web to help PSN readers find the most accurate and helpful sites for their people searches.

However, not every people search web site is looking out for their customers' best interests, thus my aim is for PSN readers to use my reviews as a guide to which sites to check out and which to stay clear of. The site that I am reviewing today is relatively new and has been gaining a lot of buzz around the water cooler here at PSN: Background-Databases.com.

Site Overview

Background-Databases.com was launched last month as a site designed to provide users with free access to governmental databases. The site is divided up into four basic categories for the user to choose from: "State Databases", "Federal Databases", "Fee Based Services" and a basic search function, "Search the Web". The most intriguing of these categories is the State Database section. Therefore, I will cover that section first.

State Database Bonanza.

Any "records freak" would be impressed by the State Databases section of Background-Databases.com. Once you select a particular state, you are taken to its page on the site which includes the databases of your state divided up into three categories: "Public Records", "State Departments" and "County Websites". Each of these categories contain quite a large collection of links which contain almost every type of public information web site that is available from a state. The "State Departments" section contains links to basic state department web sites such as the DMV, Secretary of State, Judicial System, Attorney General, State Agencies and City Listings. The "County Websites" section contains all official web sites by a state's counties. I can see this section being extremely valuable to a user because it gives a user access to very specific information from a particular county such as an index of court cases, property listings, and death records. In addition, if you are lucky enough to find a county department that can help you with a particular need instead of using a state department, you surely will be in for less bureaucratic hassles. Finally, the "Public Records" section contains a summary of all of the links listed in the "State" and "County" pages.

Besides providing a massive number of links to state records databases, Background-Databases.com also provides users with state facts and a live Google map of each state, which I felt were nice touches to the pages. I never want to stare at a blank page of links, no matter how useful the links may be.

Federal Links Frenzy

The "Federal Links" section of the site is also very comprehensive. Most major Federal Departments are listed on one page, thus giving users access to many Federal sites in one place. Anyone who does a lot of research can appreciate this benefit of the site.

Fun with Fee Based Services:

The "Fee Based Services" section of the site provides a list of companies that charge for records searches. Though I feel more companies can be included in this list, this section will help users looking to do a little more with their searches.

Spit it out Tufington! What do you think?

Ok, so with all that said, you probably want to know what I think of Background- Databases.com. In summary, I found this site to be one of the Net's best when it comes to public records databases. All in all, I would estimate that Background-Databases has over 5,000 links. Not only does Background-Databases provide you with an enormous amount of Federal, State, County, and City links, it does so in a very organized format with little or no problems. In fact, I searched several hundred of the site's links and found zero broken links. Basically, if you want public information, this is the site for you.

Finally, many so called "people search websites" are basically nothing more than spam and advertisements. Though, Background-Databases.com appears to be supported by sponsors, it is still an objective source of information with minimal commercial interruption.
